About Us
Brief summary of the IMBA facts:
1954: Foundation of an international union of the countries Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Called IMB.
1964: The IMB association changes to the structure of today's IMBA with a founding meeting and registration.
The association that was called IMB in 1954 was officially renamed IMBA (Internationale Motorsport Bond voor Amateurs) at a meeting in Ghent (B) on 10 June 1964.
In addition to Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, the IMBA's member countries today also include England, France, Switzerland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Italy and Russia.
The founding organisations, the DMCV in Germany (now the DAMCV), the SU in Belgium and the NMB in the Netherlands, agreed that the aim of the association was to promote motorsport.
Sporting fairness, skill and friendly encounters between the various drivers from the different countries were important. After ten years of experience in the IMB, they decided to register an association with fixed statutes in the register of associations.
In 1965, the IMB was officially transformed into the IMBA (International Motorsport Federation for Amateurs) on 6 March 1965 at a general meeting convened for this purpose at the Hotel Röbel, Monschau, Germany. The drafting of regulations was just as much a point as the election of presidents and the authentication and signing of the association's documents by the authorities.
After a few years of co-operation, the association was expanded to include other member associations/countries. Today, with 10 countries, the IMBA and its member associations are responsible for promoting amateur motorsport and regulating it in the motocross sector. Once a year there is a meeting (congress/members' meeting) at which the delegates of the national associations define the rules of the IMBA and at which the presidents and the board are elected. The IMBA promotes motocross events in all member countries throughout the year. It organises 6-7 events in the MX2 class (ex 125cc class international), the Open class (250/500cc international), the Ladies class and the sidecars.
The IMBA is also very active in promoting young riders. Since 1982, international youth weekends have been organised in various countries, where children from 5 to 18 years of age can compete in their respective classes with their sporting friends from all over Europe.
However, there is also a particular focus on friendship and sporting fairness in our dealings with each other.
In the meantime, motorsport enthusiasts from Luxembourg and their association GAML were also members of the IMBA from 19 November 2000 to 31 December 2004.
In 2008, at the congress in Cuijk, NL, the name of the IMBA (International Motorsport Bond voor Amateurs) was changed to the English language form "International Motor Bike Association".
According to the statutes, however, the IMBA still bears the name "International Motorsport Bond voor Amateurs".
There was a major break in the IMBA's activities between 2020 and 2021, when no events could take place due to the Covid pandemic.
Since then, the organisers' opportunities for events have also declined sharply, meaning that there have been fewer racing events in the IMBA European Championship since then.
For 2024, at least 3 events are now planned for the Ladies, MX2/MX Open and Sidecar classes. In addition, there will again be at least 3 events for the IMBA European Championship in the Veterans class, which was held for the first time in 2023. Riders who are at least 45 years old will be allowed to take part in this category. Former participants of the IMBA European Championships in previous years, but also riders who want to get a taste of IMBA air for the first time.
There was a champion from the Netherlands in 2023. But for 2024 there are two age groups 45-56 and 57-? years.
A new event concept was presented at the 2023 congress and is to be held for the first time in Kleinhau, Germany in 2024. An event where the best riders in the 50cc, 65cc 85 cc, MX2 Youth, Ladies, MX2/MX Open, Sidecar and Veterans classes from the respective countries will compete in a "Master of Nations". There will be a daily ranking = nation ranking, where the best 3 participants in each class will be ranked. Since 2024, the IMBA has also designed some new IMBA logos, which will be used in social media and on the websites of the associations from 2024.
